- URL: https://www.funlittles.com/thanksgiving-craft-for-the-toddler/
- Ages: 2–4 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: low
- Time: prep 20 min, activity 20 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class · one batch serves about 1 kids
- Skills: shapes, shape-matching, color-matching, fine-motor, math
- Cautions: ingestion-risk

## Materials (one batch)
- Construction paper in assorted colors
- 1 sheet Butcher paper (large sheet)
- 1 piece Glue stick
- 2 piece Peel and stick wiggle eyes
- Craft feathers
- 1 piece Scissors (adult) (household)
- 1 piece Pencil or marker (household)

## Safety
- Wiggle eyes and craft feathers are small parts and a choking hazard. Supervise toddlers closely and keep them out of mouths.
- An adult does all the cutting with scissors before the activity.

## Before you start
- Cut a circle for the head, an oval for the body, 7 diamonds (rhombuses) for the feathers, 2 triangles for the feet and a tiny triangle for the beak from construction paper.
- Trace the cut-outs onto a large sheet of butcher paper, arranged as a turkey.
- Set out the colored shapes, glue stick, wiggle eyes and craft feathers as a craft invitation.

## Steps
1. Invite your toddler to check out the turkey outline and the colored shapes.
2. Show how to match a colored shape to its outline on the white paper.
3. Pick up a shape and call out its name aloud.
4. Rub glue on the back and press the oval body onto its outline.
5. Glue on the diamond feathers, turning each one at an angle to fit its outline.
6. Glue the 2 triangles on for the legs.
7. Finish with the circle head, then stick on 2 wiggle eyes and a tiny triangle beak.
8. Match craft feathers to the color of each diamond and glue them on.

## Tips
- Crafts for toddlers are a little trickier because of their very short attention span and still-developing fine motor skills. Keep the crafting side simple so learning can happen naturally.
- Each time you pick up a new shape, call out its name aloud to reinforce learning.
- The diamond feathers are pretty tricky, since each one has to go on at an angle. Ours tried to fit each diamond exactly into the outline.
- Start with the body, then do the feathers, the legs and finally the head.
- An older sibling can join in. Our older sis wanted in on the action and glued the legs.
- No feathers in a matching color? We didn't have orange or blue, so we stuck with the ever popular pink.
- You can easily modify this craft for a preschooler.

[**Thanksgiving crafts for kids**](https://www.funlittles.com/category/thanksgiving/) have already hit **Pinterest** like a storm. We are slowly getting back to our crafting and playing routine after a short break after Halloween. { All our [**Halloween crafts** f](https://www.funlittles.com/category/halloween/)or projects here } Today’s Thanksgiving craft is an easy turkey craft for toddlers. You can easily modify it if you intend to use this as a craft for a preschooler. Crafts for toddlers are little trickier to do owing to the little person’s very short attention span and still developing [**fine motor skills**.](https://www.funlittles.com/category/fine-motor-activities/) So I keep it simple on the crafting side so learning can also happen naturally. Our [**number turkey**](https://www.funlittles.com/math-based-turkey-craft/) for my preschooler is a good example. Materials

I cut out a circle for the turkey’s head, oval for the body and 7 diamonds {rhombuses } for the feathers and 2 triangles for the feet.

Using those cut-outs I traced the shapes on a large sheet of paper to make a turkey. My curious toddler was invited to come check out the the Thanksgiving craft invitation.

First I showed her how to match the shape on the white paper to the colored shapes. We picked up a shape , called out its name aloud. Later she used the glue stick profusely apply glue and then matched the shape to the outline on the white paper We started off with the body and continued with the feathers.

Doing the diamond {rhombus} shaped turkey feathers was pretty tricky since she has to place each feather at an angle. She tried to fit the diamond exactly into the outline I had sketched out.

Each time we picked up a new shape we called out its name aloud to reinforce learning.. We continued learning and crafting with 2 triangles for the legs. This time the older sis wanted in on the action and participated by gluing the legs. We ended the thanksgiving craft with the head. To give the turkey a complete look, we glued 2 googly eyes and a tiny triangle for the beak . Finally to reinforce the ever elusive colors learning, I set out some feathers to be glued on. Baby A color matched the feather to the color of the diamond feathers and glued those on as well.Since we did not have orange and blue feathers we stuck with the ever popular pink feathers.

Here is our Geometric turkey for Thanksgiving.
