# Sugar Cone Christmas Trees
> Turn sugar cones upside down and decorate them with M&M's and Twizzlers, using melted chocolate as edible glue, to make a Christmas tree treat. It's open-ended, so kids decorate on their own while an adult melts the chocolate.

- Ages: 3–8 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: medium
- Time: prep 5 min, activity 20 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class
- Skills: fine-motor, creativity, cooking
- Cautions: food-dye, wheat-gluten, dairy, soy, nuts, corn

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 piece Sugar cones
- M&M's candy
- Chocolate chips
- Twizzlers
- 1 piece Craft sticks
- 1 piece Microwave-safe cup or small bowl (household)
- 1 piece Plate (household)
- Mini marshmallows (optional)

## Substitutions
- Instead of chocolate chips: Frosting (The traditional glue for these trees. The author skipped it so her preschooler could work independently without going overboard on frosting.)
- Instead of mms: Leftover Halloween candies (The author says to bring out those hidden Halloween candies.)

## Safety
- This is real food that kids will eat. Check every child's allergies and read all labels first. Chocolate chips and M&M's usually contain milk and soy, sugar cones and Twizzlers contain wheat, and candies may carry peanut or tree-nut warnings.
- An adult melts the chocolate in short microwave bursts. Stir it and check that it is warm, not hot, before kids dip their craft sticks.
- Small, hard, round candies like M&M's can be a choking hazard for young children. Kids should stay seated and supervised while they eat.
- It's chocolate and candy, so keep a check on the candy counts.
- Have everyone wash hands before handling food.

## Before you start
- Check allergies for every child and read the labels on all the candy, chocolate and cones.
- Set out a plate for each child with sugar cones, M&M's, Twizzlers and a craft stick.

## Steps
1. Set the sugar cones upside down on a plate with the M&M's and Twizzlers next to them.
2. Adult: melt the chocolate chips in the microwave for about 20 seconds, then in 10-second bursts until melted. Don't burn it.
3. Adult: stir the chocolate and check that it is warm, not hot, before kids use it.
4. Use a craft stick to dab melted chocolate onto the cone.
5. Press M&M's onto the chocolate dots as ornaments.
6. Stick on Twizzlers pieces as garland.
7. Put the trees in the fridge so the chocolate hardens.
8. Enjoy your tree as a treat, or serve it with a big bucket of ice cream!

## Tips
- It's an open-ended craft. Gather the ingredients and leave the rest to the little hands.
- We skipped the frosting so my preschooler could do it on her own, without me constantly telling her to go easy on it.
- Microwave times vary with wattage. It took 20 seconds for me. Add more time in 10-second increments only, so you don't burn the chocolate.
- We are dealing with chocolate and candy, so just keep a check on the candy counts!
- Make them ahead and store them in the freezer for a fun treat during the season.

Today we have an edible Christmas craft. An utterly delicious Christmas tree from sugar cones. It is a popular Christmas tradition in many families that we decided try this one at our house. I just omitted the frosting on the cones since I wanted my pre schooler to try this edible craft independently. She is my petite chef and I did not want to constantly tell her to go easy on the frosting. So bring out those hidden Halloween candies because this one is for you. Christmas trees are one of the first signs that the season has begun and this cooking project is easy and entertaining that kids are gonna ask for more. It is completely edible and makes for a yummy treat and perfect for the Christmas season.

### A little heads-up : It is an open ended craft project so all you need to do is gather the ingredients and leave the rest to the little hands. We are dealing with chocolate and candy.. hello…just keep a check on the candy counts..haha

- Sugar cones
- M & M’s candy
- Chocolate chips
- Twizzlers
- Craft sticks.

Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave. Time varies based on the wattage. It took 20 seconds for me. You can always put it back in for a couple of more seconds, but do so with increments of only 10 seconds every time . You don’t want to burn the chocolate. That is our edible glue for our edible craft. Use craft sticks to spoon the melted candy to the cone and use M & M’s and Twizzlers as ornaments to stick to the melted chocolate. When done put it back in the fridge for the chocolate to harden. You can also make these ahead and store it in the freezer for a fun treat to celebrate the joy of the season. Now all you need is a big bucket of Ice-Cream !
