- Ages: 3–7 yrs · Difficulty: easy · Mess: low
- Time: prep 30 min, activity 30 min
- Works for: one-on-one, small group, whole class · one batch serves about 1 kids
- Skills: fine-motor, size-ordering, math, creativity

## Materials (one batch)
- 1 piece Kitchen paper roll (cardboard tube) (household)
- Red and green construction paper
- 1 piece Wide clear tape
- Clear self-adhesive (contact) paper (optional)
- 1 piece Large heart punch (optional)
- 1 piece Classic heart punch (optional)
- 1 piece Heart punch (another size) (optional)
- 1 piece Scissors (household)
- Glue
- Craft sequins (optional)
- 1 piece Small Play-Doh can (or similar small tub) (optional) (household)

## Substitutions
- Instead of wide tape: Clear self-adhesive (contact) paper (The author's first choice. She used wide tape because she had no contact paper.)
- Instead of wide tape: Adhesive lint roller sheets plus glue stick on the tube (A reader's idea: the sheets are the perfect size. The author called it clever.)
- Instead of heart punch large: Hand-cut hearts with scissors (Lots of hearts to cut out!)

## Safety
- Sequins are small parts and a choking hazard. Supervise closely, especially with kids who still mouth things.
- An adult or older child handles scissors when cutting the hearts. Young kids use child-safe scissors with supervision.

## Before you start
- Cut hearts in three sizes (small, medium, large) from red and green construction paper, or punch them with heart punches. Older kids can make their own hearts.
- Gather all the supplies on the table: paper rolls, hearts, tape, glue, scissors and sequins.

## Steps
1. Sort your red and green hearts into small, medium and large piles.
2. Wind wide tape tightly around the paper roll, sticky side up. Cover about 3/4 of the roll and leave the bottom bare for the tree trunk.
3. Pinch or fold each heart at the bottom and stick it onto the tape.
4. Put small hearts at the top, medium hearts through the middle and large hearts at the bottom.
5. Stand the tree in a small Play-Doh can so it stays upright.
6. Roll a paper cone and attach it to the top of the roll for the pointed treetop.
7. Decorate your tree with sequin ornaments.
8. Use your trees as a table topper or in pretend play.

## Tips
- If you have a heart punch, use it. Lots of hearts to cut out. Ha!
- Big S loved it so much we made 2 more trees the following day. She made the hearts herself, and needless to say, a lot of tape got used!
- To help the tree stand up while attaching the cone, my daughter came up with her own idea: she set it right in a small can of her playdoh.
- Once the trees were done, putting on the ornaments was easy peasy!
- Small-to-large hearts turn the craft into a lesson in sizes and proportions.
- Instead of winding packing tape around the tube, try cheap adhesive lint roller sections (the perfect size) and rub glue stick on the tube. (from readers)

Make a merry Christmas tree with heart cutouts and turn this Christmas craft into a cute table topper for the holiday season or use it in pretend play. We are really excited to share this Christmas craft with you. Christmas is an exciting time for kids and adults alike. It’s the season of love, joy, family, giving, baking, entertaining, gifting and crafting. I like to make [**Christmas crafts**](https://www.funlittles.com/christmas-crafts-angels/) that are easy for my 4 yr old to do and still have some fun and learning with it. Here we have a Christmas craft brimming with love and joy from our favorite material- paper roll. { Access all our **paper roll crafts** here} For this Christmas Tree craft you will need the following: **Materials**

- **[Heart Punch {Large}](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FC1BHTK/?tag=blmemo-20)**
- **[Classic Heart Punch](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GGLAKY8/?tag=blmemo-20)**
- Wide tape or **[clear self adhesive paper](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G6N62W0/?tag=blmemo-20)**
- **[Glue](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006HUJJO/?tag=blmemo-20)**
- **[Craft Sequins](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CJDUXTY/?tag=blmemo-20)**

We cut out three sizes of hearts from green and red construction paper (trying to stick to Christmas theme ). Next step assemble all the crafting supplies you are going to need. If you have a **[Heart Punch](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000S110BY/?tag=blmemo-20)** use it. { Very handy for [**Valentine's day Crafts**}](https://www.funlittles.com/valentines-day-crafts-hearts-butterflies/)Lot of hearts to cut out. Ha! Since we did not have contact paper, we used a wide tape and wound it around the kitchen roll, nice and tight, keeping the sticky side up. Cover 3/4ths of the roll, leaving some room to show the tree trunk. To create the Christmas tree, pinch the hearts at the bottom and stick it to the tape. We are continuing with the sizes and proportions theme. { Check out our [**Christmas Tree Puzzle**](https://www.funlittles.com/christmas-activities-christmas-tree-puzzle/)} Start with the small hearts on the top, medium hearts through the center and the large ones to the bottom. Big S loved to make more and we ended up making 2 more trees the following day. She made the hearts and needless to say how much of that tape got used ! And oh!, remember to make a cone shape and attach it to the top of the roll to create the "conical" effect. To help it stand up so she could attach the cone , she came up with a creative way: she walked in with a small can of her playdoh and set the tree right in it.

There mom, now you can take a picture "- Guess my kid knows that the camera is part of crafting and learning these days ! It is always interesting to see what sparks her interest and how creative she gets with it.
